Humanism-The Soul of Hygeiaź The Founders Statement of PurposeThe Hygeia Foundation, Inc. & Institute for Perinatal Loss and Bereavement is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization whose mission is to comfort those who grieve the loss of a pregnancy or newborn child (from all causes; e.g. Miscarriage, Stillbirth, Genetic Disorders), to address disparities in access to healthcare services for medically and economically underserved families with respect, dignity and advocacy and to provide advocacy and resources for maternal and child health. The Hygeia Foundation, Inc. is striving to improve the awareness of the impact of perinatal, neonatal and infant loss on families, community and society and supports the premise that perinatal and infant morbidity and mortality can be affected by providing all women and their families who have experienced perinatal losses e.g. Stillbirths, the availability of perinatal bereavement counseling, pre- and inter-conception counseling( including an evaluation and understanding of their losses) and access to comprehensive women's healthcare services. Through Seminars in Perinatal Loss and The Ephemeris Project, the Hygeia Foundation is committed to promoting the venue of humanism and philosophy into the medical education of young healthcare professionals Founded as a program to comfort families who have endured the tragic loss of a child, Hygeiaź is now using the knowledge and experience, influence, status, responsibility and intellectual property that is the M.D. Degree to help women in need and their families find and obtain basic maternal and child healthcare, information, support, comfort, and hope. When applied in synergy with the power of the Internet so as to establish and maintain global, in-kind caring communities (of which thousands now belong at Hygeia), there develops a sense of "belonging" to those in need with which can come respect, dignity and self esteem further improving, I surmise, well being and health. Although this is a philosophical and idealized approach to a very real and complicated public health and social problem, the Hygeia Foundation and I are committed to it as it embodies all that is humanism inmedical practice. (Humanism: " ...the concept that concern for human interests, values and dignity is of the utmost importance to the care of the sick"-American Heritage Dictionary-;... a philosophy of joyous service for the greater good of all humanity ..." -Corliss Lamont.) In today's complex world of Healthcare Services, humanism is not often seen a priority. I am hoping my efforts will be realized and this will be the legacy of Hygeia. I have expanded the mission of the Hygeia Foundation to include major fund raising so that the Hygeia Foundation can support programs which help "medically indigent" families receive pre-natal care, fund targeted basic science and clinical research into the etiologies and preventions of pregnacy loss. The newest program is The Ephemeris Project, is a program to promote and provide a venue of introspection and self-expression among medical students, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to better serve them to participate in effective and compassionate care of their patients.
